the mountain

The Tibetans call it “Chomolugma” while the Nepalese call it “Sagarmatha”. We call it “Everest”. Whatever the name, Everest remains the highest mountain in the world with its towering 8850 metres. Which explains why it's such an object of fascination.

Between 1921 and 1952, eleven expeditions tried to reach the summit without success. But on May 29th, 1953 the twelfth expedition succeeded, headed by a Brit named John Hunt. Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay become the first humans ever to reach the top of the world.

Since then, over 1200 climbers from 63 different nationalities have successfully climbed the summit of Mt. Everest. However, the feat has never before been accomplished by an all Canadian team made up entirely of Quebecers.

“Sagarmatha” still remains the most prestigious summit on the planet.
